I bought this for my 9 year old down syndrome child who is afraid of failing off his regular bike. Well he loves it. He don't have to worry about falling since he is already on the ground. So I love it. Goes together easy if you use your on wrenchs not what comes in the box.

I have the Schwinn A10 bike: I plugged it in and it works although i don't use it - i have it as a back-up plan for when my 4 - D batteries die. The cord is VERY SHORT .... maybe u need an extension cord with it, i don't know anyone that would be able to plug it in and NOT have the bike in some awkward position. like i said - it's for when i'm desperate.

PROS-
- it works (i have the Schwinn A10 bike)
- saves you 4 D batteries

CONS-
- Super short cord
- makes the bike have to be in an awkward position unless you use an extension cord with this cord.

Great exercise choice for sedentary or obese people, August 22, 2009

I was inspired to purchase a pedal exerciser because of the savings it offers from the more costly stationary bike and because it is a viable fitness option for people like me who are sedentary and obese. I have been using my pedals since they day they arrived by mail and love the fact that they come fully assembled, are cost-effective and compact enough to store without dedicated storage space. There are no excuses to everyday movement with this in your household! It is worth the investment and combined with the use of free weights, provides a full body workout experience. The only drawback is that it should not be touched-moved immediately following a workout because it does generate extreme heat and it also shifts around too much to be used on hardwood floors so it is most conducive to the carpeted areas of your home.

I wanted a compact exerciser that would give me a semblance of an aerobic workout--I.e. elevate my heart rate. This "stationary bike" (Drive Pedal Exerciser Stationary Bike) is anything but stationary. I had to wedge it against a table and then use a strap to try to stablize it. Instead of moving back and forth, it tilted side to side. The workout was distracting because of the instability of the device. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Got the peddler yesterday and put it together and used it last evening. It's a very substantially constructed item- nothing cheezy about it. Being relatively heavy, it doesn't slide around easily when you use it.

The great thing about it is that it is simple to assemble: two screws attach the 2 feet parts to the peddle mechanism and those screws have nice, large, smooth knobs that you turn to tighten down- no sharp ends or tiny screw heads requiring any tools to try to work with arthritic fingers. Also, the knob regulating peddle resistance is smooth and well-made too. This is a great feature- being able to make it harder to peddle as you get stronger (this way you can continue to get stronger).

Foot peddle straps are nice and large and there's no open peddle mechanism or exposed chain to get clothing caught in- and the peddling action is very smooth.

All-in-all it's a high-quality item, not some chintzy thing and it appears to be made to last. Also recommend anyone with knee arthritis to check out Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis.

After my husband helped me pull the bike out of the box, I wanted to see if I could put this together by myself; and, if so, how long it would take. So, I set a timer, chased my husband out of the room and began.

In 15 minutes I had removed the packaging and checked for missing parts. All the parts were there.

It took me just under an hour to put the bike together, and I did it all by myself! It was really easy! The parts were packaged in an organized manner and clearly identified so I had no trouble with parts. All the tools needed to put it together were included, so I only had to find a pair of scissors to remove packaging and four D batteries to operate the console. And the picture instructions were accurate and easy to follow. That was amazing in itself!

Now, I had it together, and it was time to try it out. After playing with the controls a bit, I figured out how to select a program and gave it a whirl. Here's what I like and don't like about operating the machine:

Pros:

The machine is QUIET! This is perfect for anyone who lives in an apartment or who is concerned with waking up a family member while exercising. I can't imagine this waking anyone up. A definite plus!

It will give you a good bicycle workout. The program automatically increases and decreases resistance so you have to push yourself to finish. If it's too hard, though, you can adjust the program. There are eight resistance levels and six preset programs to choose from and a Quick Start button so you can set your own speed, distance, etc.

During your workout, the console monitors time, RPMs, distance, speed, calories burned, resistance level, and heart rate. The heart rate monitor seemed to work pretty well and I was able to get it up into my ideal range within a few minutes on a higher resistance.

I've done quite a bit of biking (rode in the MS 150) and use the local gym equipment, so I know what it takes to get a good workout. No, this is not the quality of a gym exercise bike, but for the price, it's a pretty good substitute. (Note: there is a limit of 275 pounds for this bike.)

The bike doesn't take up a lot of space (61 inches long) and it's easy to move (60 pounds). My husband and I carried it upstairs without much trouble (we're in our 60s) and I can move it around myself, when needed. In spite of it being easy to move, it's extremely stable. I don't worry that it's going to fall over or tilt while using it.

Cons:

I don't like is the fan, the display, and the seat.

The fan is useless. Don't even bother turning it on. There is not enough wind to blow a feather!

The display panel uses a very thin, light font that makes it extremely hard to read, especially with older eyes. I have to stop to read the display. Not happy with that.

The handlebar sits right below the seat cushion and as I pedal, I can feel it press on my butt! Not very comfortable! I put a small cushion back there to pad it.

Bottom line:

The bottom line is this: if you can't join a gym, this is a great addition for a lower-budget home gym. It's quiet, easy to use, convenient, doesn't take a lot of space, and you'll get a good bicycle workout for the money.

INITIAL IMPRESSIONS

The A20 is the replacement for the Active Series 20 and Amazon has now corrected their product description to show the correct information for the A20. I haven't seen the Active Series 20 so I can't really draw a comparison and trying to get comparison info (I was trying to decide which one to buy) from the sales staff at Schwinn was impossible since the person I talked to hadn't even seen an actual working model of the A20 (let alone sat on one) and his information was limited to that which was presented on the website. I decided on the A20 since it did appear that they tried to make some improvements plus there's the issue of being able to get parts if needed in the future.
I received the A20 yesterday and both my wife and I have used it once. I will update in the future.

SET UP: There are very few parts to deal with plus all necessary tools were included and this was a pleasant surprise. I laid them out and checked then against the list given in the assembly instructions before starting assembly. Everything was present. I was able to put it together by myself but having two people would be a nice option. It took about an hour to put it together and the instructions were easy to follow with words and diagrams.

FIRST TIME USE; The seat adjustment was easy which was nice since I share the use of it with my wife (I'm 5'9" and she is 5') Both of us had an easy time using it so height wasn't an issue. Some of the new items included with this new model were the water bottle holder (which I don't use) and a book platform which is now part of the lcd platform (doubtful I will use it but if you do, you'll need a way to keep the book open as it rests on a fairly shallow lip). It also has an added built in fan and I agree with the previous reviewer that it's totally useless unless you stick your face within a couple of inches of it (what were those engineers thinking???)but at least you can turn it off. The lcd panel still doesn't have back lighting which was a complaint with the Active Series 20. I'm not sure if the newer one differs in size but it's okay to read with at least some light (window,lamp,etc). The lettering isn't very bold on the lcd which makes it a little more difficult in low light. A fairly easy solution would be to attach a book light to the lip of the book holder. The operation during use is very quiet and with solid stability. The seat and back are padded and was fine during my initial use. The resistance levels were very easy to adjust as were the different courses. The monitor takes 4 D size batteries(not included) but there is an optional power adapter (9v,500ma) you can get from Schwinn for about $25 (including shipping) Might be worth looking into this or some generic adapter and saving batteries and bucks.
This was my first time on a recumbent exercise bike and I loved it. It did exactly what I was looking for in an exercise bike. I think it's a great exercise bike and the price is very reasonable. One reason I bought this bike was because of the Schwinn name (I think Nautilus owns Schwinn and Bowflex)and so far I'm not disappointed.
4 stars because of the lcd (lack of bold lettering and back light)and useless fan. These are very minor complaints which don't affect performance.

UPDATE 5-20-2011 - I've now been using this machine for a few months and without problems. There was a brief time when it made a small weird clicking noise coming from the pedal assembly but this stopped after awhile and hasn't been heard in weeks. Still a real mystery. Much of my previous review still holds. My biggest praise is for the ease of use and seat adjustment along with with the overall durability of the unit. Mechanically is does what it's supposed to do and very quietly (excluding that brief period previously noted). My biggest gripe is the display panel. It's often difficult to see in low light because primarily of the small lettering (although some back light might also be helpful). Hopefully Schwinn will address this issue in later models and thus make this model truly worthy of 5 stars.

I did extensive research before I bought this bike. I've ridden it for about ten hours since assembly and am simply delighted with it. I am a good mechanic and assembled it by myself in about three hours. The assembly manual has little text, mostly illustrations; but they marginally suffice, more text would be very helpful.

The console electronic cable going the top of the front wheel hardware has connectors at both ends -- they must be connected to the proper connectors, they are not the same configuration and are not interchangeable. So beware, the bike parts I received had this cable reversed so I was unable to connect the connectors until I removed the cable and reversed its "to -- from" direction.

The text regarding the programming of a user is unsatisfactory, confusing, does not effective communicate to a reader.

When registering the bike, you must have its serial number, the serial number is located on the bottom of the front stabilizer, record it before you assemble the bike.

In sum, if you are looking for an outstanding recumbent exercise bike at a most reasonable price, I urge you to purchase this bike.

OVERVIEW: The Schwinn 240 is an excellent recumbent exercise bike. My remarks address problems with shipping and assembly.

FREE SHIPPING VIA PILOT: It works, but, as other reviewers have elaborated, has snags. I ordered the Schwinn 240 on 11/22. Its delivery originated in Hayward CA, 26 miles south of my home. The bike was shipped 11/23 to Phoenix AZ, apparently because Pilot is headquartered there. The bike was shipped back to Hayward, arriving 11/27, with the box damaged in transit. Delivery was scheduled 11/30 for 1:59:48 PM. The bike finally arrived about 7:30PM 11/30. Damage was only to the box.

INSTRUCTION BOOKLETS:
(1) The printed materials supplied are in English and French. Supposedly instructions in Spanish are available from Schwinn's website but I could not locate them. Register the bike on Schwinn's website in the Customer Service section.
(2) The printed assembly and use booklets are 5.5x8.5 inches (WxL) and are printed on high quality glossy paper that may well outlast the bike. Pictures in the assembly booklet are small, only about 40% of the page; about 60% of each page is blank! The small pictures and minuscule labels are hard to read, so get out your magnifying glass. Schwinn should take a cue from IKEA, which has instructions with large diagrams printed on cheap 8.5x11-inch paper. I assembled the bike using a magnifying glass, repeatedly cursing Schwinn.
(3) But here is the solution that I found *after* assembling the bike and on starting to peruse the equally hard-to-read use manual. Go to Schwinn's website and download the PDFs of the assembly and use manuals (these PDFs are also available on this Amazon page!). The pages will print out on 8.5x11-inch paper with larger diagrams and print (closer to IKEA quality). The written instructions are in English (front) and French (back), so just print out the language needed.
(4) Schwinn's written instructions (both English and French) are woefully inadequate. Hence I offer some detailed elaborations for assembly:

TIME REQUIRED: At least an hour to unpack the parts, organize them, clean up, and recycle the waste. Roughly two hours to assemble the bike properly plus a bit more time to make personal adjustments (seat, pedal straps, console, etc.) on the assembled bike.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY POINTS:
(1) The screws, washers, and other small parts come attached to two pieces of cardboard, the parts held in place by blister plastic. Carefully remove the parts and organize them in the same layout as on the cardboard. Do not discard the cardboard until after the bike is assembled.
(2) Before each assembly step doublecheck diagrams so that you do not install a part backwards or upside down.
(3) When connecting two parts carefully align screws with screw holes, finger tighten, and then tool-tighten alternate holes to avoid torquing a part (that is, as one would alternately tighten lug nuts when replacing a flat tire on a vehicle).
(4) Tighten screws in a clockwise and loosen counterclockwise, or remember the ditty: Righty tighty, lefty loosey.

EXPANDED ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS:
(1) Attach stabilizers to main frame: This step is easier with a second person helping to align parts. The larger stabilizer goes in the rear, the smaller one, with wheels forward, goes in the front. Record the model and serial number from the bottom of the rear stabilizer before installation.
(2) Attach side handlebars to seat frame: This step is fairly clear, though it is awkward to juggle the parts being attached. The silver heart-rate-sensors should face up.
(3) Attach seat pads to seat frame assembly: This is also a juggling step for one person. The seat back has eight holes for the four screws. There is no explanation in the assembly manual but presumably the lower set of holes is for persons of average height whereas the upper set of holes is for very tall persons.
(4) Slide seat assembly onto seat rail: An insert requires that the seat assembly (item 13) held in place by seven screws (these are loosely tightened) be first removed,
(5) Connect heart rate cable to seat assembly: A simple step.
(6) Install seat rail bracket: Note the proper orientation of seat bracket (item 10).
(7) Install seat assembly to frame assembly: This step is easier with a second person helping to align parts. The seat bracket (item 10) goes inside the seat tube. It may have arrived temporarily but improperly installed outside the tube. The electronic cable should be completely inserted in the rear seat tube to avoid crimping the cable.
(8) Install console mast to frame assembly: Be sure the cables are properly oriented and not inverted. Male prongs couple to female receptacles; note the tabs for orientation and push with lots of force to couple securely. After months of trying to decide if we should buy an exercise bike, we finally bit the bullet. We went right down to Dick's sporting goods and even though they didn't have one on display, they did have one int he back. We bought the Schwinn 240 due to it being one of the newest models. Some of the things we really liked better were minor, but made the difference to us. The number of different programs were higher than the other models. Being able to remember a user's information was also a huge positive from other models where every time a different user uses the equipment you have to reset all your information. The cup holder not being under the seat but on the console made more sense and having the basket to store magazines and things just seemed neater. It took about 1.5 hours to assemble. Hint: A couple of the parts were already on the bike which was confusing when comparing to the parts list. The model is nice looking, smaller than our elliptical and easy to move around with the wheels. I haven't had it long enough yet to know how it will hold up, but it's very sturdy, very quiet and seems like it will last for a long time.
